1. Go Exploring in the World’s Most Sacred Caves

Don’t take my word for it, National Geographic has named Actun Tunichil Muknal the world’s most sacred cave system. According to the tradition, the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave is the entrance to the Mayan underworld. If you are traveling through Belize, it is almost a must that you put this on your list of things to do in Belize.  The only way to explore these caves is by booking a tour. Tourism through the caves is very strict and regulated due to protection permits. In fact, the only way to see the caves is by going with a certified tour guide in a group of no more than eight people. You can find all types of tours and excursions of these caves offered by different companies. But be sure to book yours in advance because only a limited number of people can explore these caves each day. The great thing is you can’t go wrong with the tour company you pick, they all offer similar experiences so you are sure to have a blast. Save yourself the hassle and book your tour about a couple weeks in advance to secure your spot.

Before you head out on your adventure, be sure to pack some waterproof or water resistant apparel. We recommend taking along a compression sack like the waterproof AegisMax Compression Sack. You will be doing a bit of swimming across rivers and through caves. A good compression sack that can keep everything like snacks and extra clothes dry will come in handy. Be advised that this cave exploration may not be for everyone. It is a bit rigorous and includes a fair amount of hiking, climbing, and swimming. The effort will be well worth it though. You can expect to come across hidden Mayan relics, sacred tombstones, and centuries of hidden history.

Price Point

Thought these cave explorations do come with a bit of a price tag, they do not disappoint. You can expect an excursion to the caves to cost anywhere from $100 to $120 depending on the package you decide to book. One thing is for certain, if you find yourself in this coastal country, exploring the caves is a must for things to do in Belize.

2. Visit Caye Caulker

Another one of the coolest things to do in Belize is visiting Caye Caulker. Caye Caulker is a tiny little island just off the coast of Belize. This tiny island has an even smaller population. The 2000 inhabitants that populate Caye Caulker Village are welcoming and kind to the growing number of backpackers and tourists who visit seasonally. This limestone coral island is just under one mile long and the uniqueness of this island is like no other. On one side of the island, you can explore some of the dry, exposed coral reef. When you are ready to go exploring the live reef, hop onto the other side where diving and snorkeling is an experience like no other. There are also great manatee tours throughout the island that you cannot miss out on.

We recommend Caye Caulker for a day trip. If you plan on exploring the whole island in depth, then it may be wise to stay at one of the many hotels scattered throughout the island. You don’t have to worry about packing along any snacks or food either because there are plenty of restaurants that offer some of the Caribbeans most authentic foods. Caye Caulker is certainly one of the islands that offer many things to do in Belize. Don't miss out on it.

Price Point

You have two ways of getting to this hidden island. You can travel by plane from one of the major airports on the mainland, or you can travel by water taxi. We recommend the water taxi for an experience that is unique and kind to your wallet. Water taxies service is provided by the Caye Caulker Water Taxi Association, and fares start at $25.00 per person (US dollars).

Don’t let the plainness of the name fool you. While you are here, one of the things to do in Belize that you absolutely can not miss out on is visiting the iconic landmark of the Great Blue Hole. The Great Blue Hole is a massive marine sinkhole just off the coast of Belize. It lies in the middle of the Lighthouse Reef System and is the perfect spot for deep sea diving and snorkeling. Even if you are not a diver or snorkeler, you can still enjoy the massive beauty of the Great Blue Hole from the boat. (Though we highly recommend jumping in the water.)

The boat ride to the Great Blue Hole can be just as majestic as the destination itself. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself speeding through the waters alongside dolphins. When you get to the edge of the hole, you can expect to see an array of wildlife including sea turtles, jellyfish, octopus, and a range of tropical fish. If you are brave enough to dive into the hole itself, be on the lookout for deep sea creatures including nurse sharks and bull sharks.
