The somewhat smaller sized metropolis was just chosen by ROUGH GUIDES as the best destination to visit in the upcoming year. With New Zealand clocking in as the best country, Newcastle UK takes the cake for the best destination. Coming in front of Malawi, Malta, and Cuba, it’s definitely not the most flashy exotic tourist destination. However, this growing city got its name for its cited, “Geordie geniality” and “burgeoning restaurant scene, fantastic museums and architectural feats like Tyne Bridge”. The place is more than alive at night, and there is always something to do. Seriously, Newcastle is certainly the place you want to be.

Capital of Culture

Even being designated as the best destination of the year, it has also got awarded as the European Capital of Culture. This European Union gives this award to three cities annually. The senior web editor at Rough Guides, Coralie Modschiedler, was happy to help decide this. She wrote, “We wanted to look at the north of England because there’s so much happening in the major cities. Liverpool is celebrating being the capital of culture a decade ago, Manchester has so much going for it, we just felt it was Newcastle’s turn, and this exhibition promises to be quite an event.”

The Great Exhibition

Being the host of this year’s Great Exhibition, Newcastle will soon be sitting on the global stage. Showcasing the world’s industry wonders, the tourism is bound to expand. The leader of the Newcastle City Council, Cllr Nick Forbes says, “It will be one of the biggest events in the country attracting millions of visitors from all over the world to learn about our art, culture, design and innovation.”
