2017 was a record-breaking year for the global travel and tourism sector. Across the globe, last year tourism and international ranked at an all time high. With millions of travelers traveling to new destinations, the global economy saw a 4.6% growth. Asia’s tourism market in particular thrived in 2017. Other nations such as Tunisia, Turkey and Egypt recovered nicely, after previously being impacted by terrorism.
After such a prosperous year, what can you expect for travel in 2018? According to reports, global travel and tourism may decrease slightly over the next year.
What does 2018 hold for global travel?
One of the reasons for the decline is the significant damage caused by the natural disasters of last year. The Caribbean took a sizable hit in 2017, with the effects of the hurricanes severely impacting tourism. Puerto Rico and the British and U.S. Virgin Isles especially saw a drop in travel. President and CEO of the council, Gloria Guevera notes that the “power of resilience” is a critical aspect of these nations’ recovery process.
So what does the future hold for tourism around the world? Guevera stated, “Over the longer term, forecast growth of the Travel & Tourism sector will continue to be robust as millions more people moved to travel to see the wonders of the world.” The lower numbers of 2018 should not significantly affect travel as a whole.
