While there have been a few times I’ve roughed it in a sleeping bag, I’m the kind of camper who likes to bring an inflatable mattress, good sleeping bag, and supportive neck pillow with them. My favorite camping pillow of all time continues to be the Nemo Fillo.

Why do I love this style so much. When I’m ready to wind down for the night, it offers plenty of comfort and versatility. It not only packs down to a size that’s easy to store but it offers all the feels of a luxury pillow that would take up a lot of room. I realize that the Nemo Fillo faces some stiff competition on the market when it comes to areas of specialized use. But even so, I’m confident in its abilities to perform. After all, this hybrid pillow is easy to use. At a price point of $50, it is clear that a lot of thoughtful design went into the making of this product. There is a layer of memory foam at the top, baffled netting at the bottom, the outer shell is composed of polyester and microsuede, and it has a built-in stuff sack.

Like I said, comfort is key. One of the things I appreciate the most about the Nemo Fillo is that it has a large surface space where you can lay your head. When I tested it out, I appreciated that even if I moved my head away from the center, I didn’t have to worry about it sliding off of the inflatable pillow. 

As annoying as that sounds, don’t be surprised. It’s all too common with most models. I also appreciated that the air lock was tight. No one wants to wake up to their pillow deflating on them in the middle of the night. This pillow is so comfortable you will forget you’re sleeping on air. If you are a picky sleeper (yes, we exist), you can use the air valve to adjust the thickness. This makes it versatile and easy to use. It doesn’t matter if you’re a back sleeper, side sleeper, or heck, even a stomach sleeper.

Let’s talk about the microsuede outer shell, shall we? This is one of the features that gives the Nemo Fillo the right to its title as a luxury camping pillow. Couple the microsuede fabric with the memory foam design and you’ll be in heaven. After a long day of hiking, cooking, and sitting by the campfire, you’ll swear you’ve never felt anything so soft in your life. Needless to say, I slept like a baby when I used it.

Weight

As wonderful as this product is, it’s fair that it does have one drawback. If you’re a backpacker who likes to travel super light, you should know that the Nemo Fillo is on the heavier side of camping pillows. It weighs 9 ounces. That’s pretty much the only complaint I could think to list about this pillow, which really says a lot. All in all, unless you are an extreme minimalist packer, the weight should not make much of a difference in your decision making process. At least it didn’t in mine.

Ease of Use

I’m happy to report that the Nemo Fillo is one of the easiest camping pillows I’ve ever used. Sure, it’s inflatable but it takes next to no work to blow it up to size. It inflates in three breaths and the air valve makes it super easy to adjust the air level the way you like it. No, you won’t run the risk of deflating your entire pillow either. The only thing about the ease of use that I would change if I could is the size of the stuff sack. Sometimes, it can be hard to get the pillow back in the bag when you want to pack up.

Another thing I like about the Nemo Fillo is how compatible it is with mummy-style sleeping bags. Its length makes it super easy to fit inside of the hood of a sleeping bag. Finally, cleaning is simple. Simply take off the outer shell and toss it in the washing machine. After a cycle in the washer and dryer, it will be as good as new.

For a pillow with such a large surface area, the Nemo Fillo is surprisingly packable. When it is compressed into the stuff sack, it measures just 1.4 liters in volume. This is smaller than a lot of other competitor styles out there on the market.
