1. Arrive Early (Even If You Have to Wait)

Here’s the deal: You’ll hear a lot about the importance of arriving early, and it’s not just a suggestion, it’s a life-saver. I get it, the airport can be overwhelming, and waiting around can feel boring, but trust me, it’s the best thing you can do. By arriving early, you give yourself plenty of time to find your terminal, go through security without rushing, and—most importantly—grab that Starbucks (we’re not forgetting that). Even if you end up waiting for a while after security, it’s way less stressful than rushing last-minute. Plus, having that extra time feels like a relaxing wave of calm that washes over you. You’ve got time to grab a snack, find a comfy seat, and enjoy the moments before the chaos of boarding begins.

2. Don't check a bag

If at all possible pack light, and take your personal item and a carry-on suitcase. It will save you time at check-in  and upon arrival, you won't have to wait for what feels like an eternity watching bag after bag go around and around waiting on yours. Just put it in the overhead and grab it and go. If the overheads are full when you board, the gate agents will do a jet side check for you. They tag it and put it under the airplane in the cargo hold, but when you get off the plane, they will give it back to you right there on the jetway.  You can step off the airplane and start your adventure immediately. I like the hardshell case, with 4 spinner wheels. It practically rolls it self and I don't worry about it ripping open, or being banged around. I would recommend choosing a color that is easily identifiable, you can quickly find it in the overhead, and you don't accidentally take the wrong one.  Make sure to put an Apple Tag in your suitcase and personal item, in case you get seperated from them, or someone accidentally (or purposfully) walks off with your belongings.

3. Be cute, stylish and practical with your personal item

Put your carry-on bag overhead and your personal item under the seat in front of you. I like to take a tote bag that has plenty of room for all my goodies, that I can easily access at my feet, but it doesn't take up all my foot and leg room. I keep it stylish, roomy, yet easily compacted and folded into odd shapes to fit under the seat in front of me.  In my totebag, I have some travel size essentials, including a RFID compact keychain wallet. I can easily put it in my pocket if I don't want to carry my bag around on vacation. I like to clip an apple tag keychain to the keychain on the wallet just in case as well.

4. Must Get Starbucks – Start the Trip Right

You can’t start any trip without a solid pre-flight routine, and let’s be honest—nothing beats grabbing your favorite drink from Starbucks after security. Whether you’re going for the classic iced coffee, a caramel macchiato, or an iced chai latte, getting a Starbucks is like a mini ritual that sets a relaxed tone for the rest of your adventure. It’s more than a refresher; it’s about taking a moment for yourself before the whirlwind of travel begins. It is always fun to see how close – or far they get in writing your correct name on your cup. Sometimes you kick off your adventure with a whole new identity thanks to Starbucks.

5. Nothing Beats a Good Snack (Caramel M&Ms Are the Best)

Snacks are an essential part of any solo flight. Not only do they keep you from getting hangry, but they can also be a great way to pass the time. For me, there’s one snack that beats them all: Caramel M&Ms. Why? Because they’re delicious and, unlike other snacks, my fingers stay clean. You can enjoy them without worrying about crumbs or sticky fingers. Plus, caramel adds that perfect balance of sweetness to keep your taste buds satisfied.

6. Always Bring Gum – Keeps Your Mouth Busy

After snacking and sipping on your drink, you might keep thinking about that last M&M or craving something else. That’s where gum comes in. A pack of gum is a must-have for solo flights. Not only does it freshen your breath, and help keep your mind off the next snack, it helps pressurize your ears on take off and landing. Plus, it gives you a simple way to stay occupied, whether you’re chewing, or just enjoying the fresh taste. It’s a perfect distraction to help you relax and focus on the journey ahead.

7. At the Airport: Find Your Gate, Then Go Explore

Once you’re past security, it’s time to start your adventure. The first thing you need to do is find your terminal. Knowing where you’re leaving from is key to making sure you don’t end up running around the airport last minute. Once you’re sure of your gate, it’s time to explore. Take a walk around, check out any cool stores, grab a snack, or just find a comfy place to chill at your gate! But make sure you don’t lose track of time! Once you know where your gate is, make sure to keep an eye on it so you don’t get lost in the airport and end up scrambling for your flight five minutes before departure. Trust me, you’ll feel a lot better knowing you have time to spare. Make sure to keep an occasional eye on the departure monitors while you are exploring – sometimes they change the gate on you! They will also let you know if your flight is delayed or on time.

8. Getting Lost? No Big Deal – The Airport Will Help You Out

It’s totally normal to feel a little lost in the airport, especially when you’re navigating it alone for the first time. But don’t panic—airport staff are super helpful! If you ever find yourself unsure of where to go, don’t hesitate to ask one of the security staff or airport employees for help. There is also security on golf carts at many airports that can help you get around quicker if you’re in a rush. They’re there to make your life easier, so don’t be afraid to ask for directions.

9. Get a Window Seat – Views Are Always Better from Up High

If you can, always aim for a window seat when flying solo. The views from the plane are something special. It’s like getting a bird’s-eye view of the world, and let’s face it, nothing beats the moment you take off and the ground starts to fade away. Plus, having your own space by the window makes it easier to settle in and enjoy the flight.  Having the window allows you to decide- talk to your seat neighbor or turn and gaze out the window, while drowning out the sounds with noice canceling airpods.  So, be that person who rushes to get the window seat (it’s totally worth it).

10. Reading is a Good Activity, but So Is Getting Creative

Reading is a solid option if you want to zone out during the flight, but there are other ways to pass the time too. If you’re feeling crafty, trymaking a friendship bracelet. All you need are a couple of strings and some time on your hands—plus, you’ll have a cute memento from your trip when you’re done. Or, take a pen and start scribbling on a piece of paper, or do some word games and puzzles. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy; you can jot down your thoughts, draw random doodles, or plan out your next  move in your trip. It’s a great way to pass the time without worrying about the minutes ticking away, all while looking at the amazing views. Personally, if I am going to read, I want something that is going to captivate me from page 1, like a good Agatha Christie book.
